Hydrosols: The Essence of the Plant in the Memory of Water

Many people are familiar with the remarkable benefits of essential oils: concentrated extracts containing powerful aromatic compounds from plants. They are intense, volatile, and deeply active.

However, few have experienced an extraction that is equally meaningful, but far gentler: hydrosols. (Aguas florales)

During distillation, as steam passes through plant material and then condenses, more than essential oil is separated. The resulting water — El hidrolato — retains water-soluble aromatic compounds, plant acids, and micro-fractions that the essential oil does not contain.

It is water infused with plant life. Unlike essential oils, which require large quantities of plant material to produce small amounts of highly concentrated oil, hydrosols make fuller use of the distillation process. Their production can be more sustainable, and their action softer and safer for everyday use.

If essential oil is intensity, hydrosol is subtlety.

They work differently.
They do not dominate.
They accompany.

In a world that seeks concentration and potency, hydrosols remind us that medicine can also be gentle and respectful of the body and of the land.
